Several sources have reported that Elon Musk is now a trillionaire. Considering he reached the $500 billion dollar plateau less than one year ago, this means that the man who was already the richest man on earth, has gained an additional $500 in wealth in less than a year. This represents an existential threat to the continued existence of our democracy. Why? Because it more clearly than ever, evidences America’s entry into the world of oligarchy, plutocracy and oligopoly, all of which is a half step below outright dictatorship. Oligarchs like Musk have too many opportunities to buy-off politicians and/or to buy influence (whether legally or illegally). In Musk’s case, given his nearly $300 million campaign contribution to Trump to boost him into the Presidency in 2024, and the nightmare of DOGE, we’ve already seen this process in action once.
