Happy 4th folks !
GURU here ….subbing for Stony Riva
This is a very impromptu show
We weren’t scheduled to do it
But Sammy
our new summer intern
here at the station
actually made Rufus and I
feel guilty for not havin
a July 4th show.
So, I decided to come here to the station
All by my lonesome
To see if yours truly
Can’t make your holiday weekend
A little livelier
Maybe get yinz to tap your feet a few times.
I’m a singer
And wannabe guitar player
…and a bad one at that…. but
Not a DJ
So, I’ll keep the jive to a minimum
And just play stuff.
Our first tune is so easy to pick
That one almost overlooks it.
So, here goes.
Yinz might wanna stand for this:
https://youtu.be/DADmZdbQ9x8?si=ulHUlLTJfTImGTLa
Reminds me of my dad takin’ me to Pirate games as a kid
At the old Forbes Field back in the
Summers of the 60’s.
Seein’ all those people stand
All the players takin’ off their ball caps
Turnin towards the flag above the ivied walls
Of center field
And singin’ Was amazing
I have so many memories of that whole area
In the Burgh and Forbes Field
It makes me a little misty eyed.
Ok enough of that
movin’ on.
America does have a soul
The soul that yearns for liberty and freedom
That believes in human rights
And equal opportunity for all
So let’s celebrate that yearning of the soul
With none other than the Godfather of it himself
Here’s James Brown Living in America
https://youtu.be/c5BL4RNFr58?si=jnzHOEgYpnKOGr0h
If that doesn’t put yinz in the grove
Nothin’ will.
My fans out there.
…..And, of course, they are legion
Will be amazed to know this but
This next tune is off an album
That was the very first vinyl record of
Rock or Rock & Roll that I ever bought
All my record purchases up til then were
Of classical music.
Yes, GURU was quite the musical nerd
In his early days. It wasn’t that I didn’t like
Rock n roll and stuff, but I think I sorta thought
That if I actually bought it I might get grounded
Because only bad boys listened to that kinda stuff.
But be that as it may
This next record just so happens to have a tune
On it that is also relevant to tonight’s occasion.
Here’s
Edgar Winter and White Trash doin’ Back in the USA
https://youtu.be/TyBIfgj2jrY?si=TzVqdSc5drZOzmAa
I wanna get through a lot of tunes here
So we’re gonna keep our comments short
And I wanna make sure I get at least one country tune
In because Nashville in many ways represents
the heart of American music.
So, without further ado here’s
Brooks & Dunn with Only in America
https://youtu.be/GN1iI-DaJNw?si=Zom_CHlDPhFlFU8_
Speakin’ of the heart of America.
Indiana is pretty darned
Heart of America too.
This particular tune is one that our band
Did back in the 90s. and that I did
Last night at Caddy’s
I hadn’t done it in about 25 years
And I was soooo glad that the crowd really appreciated it
All I can say is Ppphhheeeewwww!!
What a relief.
Anyway, I love the comments
That the former John Cougar makes about this tune
And that era, because it’s exactly the way I feel.
John Mellencamp R.O.C.K. in the USA
https://youtu.be/SgtmStUrXMQ?si=uyhhMBB9X79fOZa5
Okay, time to pay some respect to our elders.
I owe soooo much to the mighty Midlo Trojan Band
Our band director, Mr. H was sooo great at giving us
Great tunes to play.
And, included in the ones we played were a lot
Of John Phillip Sousa tunes
Which, of course, have become part of the very fabric
Of American music
His tunes are soooo July 4th that they simply must be played.
There are about six of them that I can think of to choose from
But unfortunately, I gotta whittle it down to these 3 because of
Father time.
So here they are. Tunes that are
as July 4th
and American
As apple pie
So please enjoy
Semper Fidelis by the Marine Band
The Thunderer by the Army Concert Field Band
And the Stars and Stripes Forever… again by the Marine Band
https://youtu.be/qgABUZ4i9co?si=tmrEIvi-_py4TTHF
https://youtu.be/csaCJWGeEZ0?si=O8oKvYC8YLtv8KwZ
https://youtu.be/NV-czdDq4Is?si=4mIeyrjvkJ-QoO6q
That will about do it for our July 4th celebration
But as an encore
I sorta have a hankerin’ for this next tune.
It was written way way way back in 1938
By Irving Berlin and was sorta resurrected in a big way
During the 70s or 80s…
Especially by the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team
The Flyers and their fans thought that
Kate Smith was a good luck charm
And so she sang this tune at many of their games
Bein’ a Yinzer and a Penguins fan myself
I won’t hold all that against our encore artist
or this wonderful and inspiring tune.
So, I’m gonna leave you folks with our last tune
And wish everyone a safe and happy 4th.
