Good evenin’ folks
Stony Riva here.
We gotta a slightly different lineup tonight
So, I’m as curious as all of Yinz to see what happens
So let’s get goin’
We kick it off tonight with toe tappin tune from
None other than
Autry DeWalt Mixon Jr.
Mr. Mixon, who was to become known as
Junior as in Junior Walker,
was born in Arkansas
But moved to South Bend Indiana
Where his musical career really began
According to the Oracle of Wiki
He eventually became associated
with early 60’Motown
But his style really originates
in what was known as
Jump Blues
Whatever the genesis, however,
Junior definitely developed his own distinctive sound
Which…is very saxophone driven
And that makes sense because Junior Walker
is known primarily as a saxophone player.
So let’s start this evening’s festivities
With Junior Walker and the Allstars
Playin’/singin’
Baby Ain’t You Shame
https://youtu.be/JCjdfN9V0OY?si=m5SxyCAcRo5u3yo3
Yeah Junior will always get things goin. That’s for sure!
Next up we have a group
To my mind they are a Dixieland jazz group
Who are probably best known for a tune
That our old friend Alden Aaroe used to play
On WRVA
And that was a great tune called Washington Square
Here is another sampling of their fine work product
A tune I really like
Here are
The Village Stompers with Haunted House Blues
https://youtu.be/Qzw-K81Rd3k?si=0pWA3XVz1opfOO-J
Okay.
Normally we have at least one more tune before
Our half-time break
But our station manager Rufus Coldwater
Has pulled rank on me
And wants an extra long segment for his editorial
He’s says he’s got somethin’ special for us.
So let’s see what it is
It’s all yours Rufus!
———————–
Hello folks Rufus Coldwater here
I’m a little concerned.
Concerned that all you folks think that all Rufus is, is an old stick in the mud.
A fuddy duddy.
Well I’m here to tell everyone, that Stony, Suzi, Buck and GURU aren’t the only ones around here who know a thing or two about music. Indeed, I propose that tonight I enlighten everyone with a tiny bit of music history.
So forget about elections. Forget about politics. Forget about any bad weather that you may be encountering this Thanksgiving weekend. As Stony might say: Let’s just get into the groove of some great and historically significant tunes.
First up, is by the guy who arguably made Tina Turner famous. This is her hubby Ike. And in large part he’s every bit as musically significant as Tina because, according to the Oracle of Wiki, his first recording of Rocket 88 in 1951 which was written by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, is considered by many to be the very first rock and roll song. And, aside of course to later forming the Ike and Tina Turner Review Ike is also historically important because he was very instrumental in furthering the early careers of BB King, Howlin’ Wolf and Bobby Blue Bland.
Here Ike and his Kings of Rhythm are performing what probably is the very first rock and roll tune “Rocket 88”:

I should note that that recording was credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, but apparently it was actually Ike Turner and his Rhythm Kings who performed on that record.
Next up we will listen to another first. This time we go to Detroit and Motown Records. This tune which is sung by Barrett Strong was the very first Motown hit record back in 1959. It was written by Barry Gordy and Janie Bradford. So without further ado let’s give it a listen.
Here’s Barrett Strong singing Money, (That’s What I Want).
https://youtu.be/yeVx1C73o8k?si=e27kn0vFmiblusF-
I’m not sure but many people probably think that that was a Beatles tune because they did a popular version of it as well. But no, it’s a Barrett Strong Motown tune.
Fast forward to August 1, 1981. One of the things I remember most about the 1980s was it was the first time I can ever remember having a “remote” for my TV. Up until then, every time you wanted to change the TV station you had to get off your butt and go to the TV set and manually change the channel. There was no channel surfing back then. Not like there is today. But
that was one big technological advance in the 80s. We won’t get into the introduction of the very earliest days of personal computers but for music lovers the biggest development had to be the launch of MTV. Music set to cool videos. Wow ! A scrumptious sensory feast.
And to commemorate that fateful event on August 1, 1981 we have for your listening pleasure the very first few minutes of MTV’s launch, along with the very first music video ever put in commercial television. Note the music doesn’t really start on this for a couple of minutes.
MTV Debut 8/1/81 with The Buggles performing Video Killed the Radio Star

Boy does that video take me back ! One other thing about TV remotes back then. No Bluetooth or wireless tech. Those remotes were actually connected to TV by a cable, which was kind of helpful, because that made it tough to loose the remote in the sofa cushion or wherever. You could always find the remote by just following the cable.
Well. I see my times up. I hope everyone enjoyed today’s music lesson. I sure did.
This is Rufus Coldwater.
Back to you Stony
——————————————————-
Alright ! Okay Rufus. I’m impressed. Very impressed.
That was great. The MTV segment really brought back some memories
I’m sure for some of us.
What’s this.
Oh my goodness
It’s a gift from
None other than our
Assistant Executive Prodcuer of Everything
Miss Suzi.
[some inaudible mumbling in the background]
Folks
Suzi apologizes
But wants to say
That she didn’t have enough time to do
Any background research on this next piece
Apparently she’s developed some kind of
Rash…
And her doctor says it’s from messing around
In our dark dank moldy garage
So, she doesn’t really know anything about this next
Tune or whether it’s even
A 60s garage tune
….but one of her male friends …Buzz
Who she says plays geeetttar in a band
Told her this was right up DJ Ltd’s alley
And so he gave this to her to play for us
tonight
So with some sense of trepidation
She’s taken a very very deep breath
And hopes and prays that we all like
This next tune.
She does say however that
There may be other bands called Jagged Edge
In any event….here’s
the Jagged Edge with how many times
https://youtu.be/I8B9NKC1OCQ?si=zSHGtrdLDw1TLxmX
Alright ! Suzi really can come up with the gold can’t she?
Even when she’s not able to. I really enjoyed that.
Suzi, be sure to tell Buzz thanks. Great suggestion !
Well…[sigh]
The ole Buckaroo is giving me that dreaded winding motion again
Any everyone knows what that means
It means he wants me to wind up our show
I know
I know
Bummer
Our exalted cleanup tune tonight is
From yet another artist
Who hasn’t gotten enough love here in the states
Our cleanup artist is a guy
who can definitely sweep away the competition
And except for one other contestant
He did so on Simon Cowell’s X-Factor
A British talent show 15 or 20 years ago.
After that he had a ton of commercial success in the UK
But not so much here stateside.
But our cleanup tune will demonstrate
Just how talented this guy is
So old Stony’s gonna send everyone home tonight
with
Olly Murs doin’ one of his UK hits Dance With Me Tonight
https://youtu.be/F3EG4olrFjY?si=dzAwT65dlhHdzp9A
Well, that’s it
That’s all
There ain’t no more
For Buck, Suzi, GURU
And myself Stony Riva
Good night
And don’t let those nasty bed bugs bite !
