RBT music: BB King Pan’s People 60’s garage rock +

[Editor’s Note:  Welcome to the latest edition of Red Blooded Tunes (RBT). A page dedicated to the preservation of music made by humans, back when music actually rocked or touched one’s soul.  While we occasionally do feature contemporary tunes they must be up to the higher standards of music past.  Along the way it is our sincere hope and purpose to discuss, enlighten and educate the reader about relevant political, economic and business matters and to help maintain both a record and an appreciation for good old man-made music before AI makes man and real music a mere afterthought.

RBT is a transcript of a fictional radio broadcast with direct links to the tunes being played.  The transcript is normally in 3 parts: (1.)The first is a transcript of the radio broadcast featuring a DJ and his cohorts who provide interesting background and commentary about the tunes being played.  Importantly the transcript (this blog post) has direct click on links that will take the reader directly to a video that plays the tune; (2.) Part 2 is the Editorial: (which normally deals with the subject in the title of this blog post). Tonight’s editorial is about artificial intelligence, the budget and the destruction of democracy; and (3) that’s followed by a the second half of the Dj’s radio broadcast again with links to offsite videos playing the tunes the DJ is playing.]

Hey folks

It’s Stony Riva

And the gang again

Time for Red Blooded Tunes

Well, folks

I’ll ya

Sometimes its difficult to come up with new material

Which is what we here at Red Blooded Tunes

Are committed to doing

After all we don’t want to stagnate

And

We wanna preserve an appreciation

For good ole human

Yes human

music

Well, last night we took in GURU’s act at Manny’s

Very interesting.

It was a  breezy /icy 27 degrees outside

Which is cold for Central Virginnie

Interestingly there was a decent crowd

For a very wintery Tuesday night

GURU who, to borrow from Captain Kirk

Is always

exploring strange new musical worlds,
and going where no man, no woman

nor Klingon for that matter

has gone before nor cares to

in any event

for whatever reason

he Decided to do a few blues and soul tunes

instead of his  more typical

country and rock & roll.

Sayin’ he did so

Because of some  great old

tunes he ran across

watching….of all things

our first group of ladies

We’ve seen these gals before

In our Tick’s Notes and Tunes days

Doin’ a simply mesmerizing, captivating

And hormone inducing dance to

CCR’s Green River

Frankly I didn’t think that could be topped

But, when you see this video

You may have other thoughts

I don’t know

But as Herm Edwards might say

…or was it Howard Cosell ?….

Who knows…but in any event

That’s why they play the game.

https://youtu.be/nFZvE5tTvm8?si=do3c-lqKHBk_UwKX

Why don’t they make shows like

Top of the Pops…which of course

Was a British show and/or

America’s Shindig any more?

I’ve gotta confess

I’ve watched that video over and over

For Yinz Yankees out there that was

Pan’s People doing the Barry Blue tune

Do You Wanna Dance

And, that’s why we do what we do because

I have serious doubts that many, if any, of today’s Americans

Know about that show or Barry Blue or Pan’s People

In any event

GURU said he was trying to find a good version of

Rubberband Man by the Spinners

Which we played last time

to sing at Manny’s.

That song, says GURU is kinduv tough to learn

Because the vocal part in the song quickly gives away

To a Rap/commentary kinda thing

All so that the Spinners can dance.

But he pressed the search

And lo and behold he came upon an arrangement

Done…by… by dinghies…

The Captain and Tenille

Probably not one GURU’s all time favorite groups

Because they are a little

Too poppy for GURU.

But let me tell ya.    There’s no doubt C&T

Both of them

Had talent

Anyway, who ever arranged and choreographed this

Did a great job.  GURU actually likes the arrangement

Better than the Spinners original version.

Even the much maligned and overlooked Captain

Did a great job miming rubberband play

But Tenille really shows what a diverse talent she is

While her voice may not at first seem right for the song

She hits all the notes, is in tune and does

A really great job with the dance

Besides…GURU said her version actually allowed him

To learn the song better.

But unfortunately, Manny’s doesn’t have the C&T version

Which essentially repeats the first verse one step higher

Without all the wrapping and commentary.

But here again, we ended up  watching this over and over.

And Tenille is enchanting

Next up is a tune

GURU was Shanghaied into doin’

He put in his request with the KJ

To a really jazzed up version of

Every Day I Have the Blues

She may not have had it

But in any event

she pulled up a different tune

But like a good sport

GURU dived right in

On time and in pitch

To this classic from one of our

Alltime favorite artists

In fact, GURU said he’s seen this guy in concert

5 times, tellin’ me once

Has was the lone cube of salt

In a sea of pepper.

https://youtu.be/UOnzDKvn7YI?si=D4TTb4KWIy3bLhuo

That of course, was the inimitable BB King

Doin’ his classic Why I Sing the Blues

It was kinda funny the Brothers at the bar

With the first few bars of that tune

They turned around kinda bemused that

GURU was up there doin’ that particular tune

But GURU got off the stage and saw some sista

Still groovin’ over the performance

So he felt pretty darned good about it

Well, that’s gonna do it for the first half of the show

And Yinz know what that means…

Yep.  It’s time for our all knowing

Font of sage-like info

Our Station Manager

Rufus Coldwater

Exploring in depth once again

A subject neither he nor anyone else

Cares about….

Just kidding

Just kidding

Ya know Rufus

In these tryin’ times

We gotta do somethin’ to keep it light

——————————————————-

. Thanks Stony….I guess.

I was going to recommend that our prepare for our federal budget to crash soon because of the  tens of millions of unemployment claims that AI will cause.   The repercussions of that might very well extend to the form of government we end up with, and, perish the thought, it may not be democratic.  That’s with a small d.

On the brighter side I was also going to say our democracy owes a debt of gratitude to Senate Republicans in Indiana for not caving into Trump’s threats to cut off federal funding to Indiana if they didn’t amend the Congressional districting maps in that state to take seats away from the Democrats and give them to Republicans.  However, and thankfully, those Indiana Senate GOPers held firm and refused to redraw the Congressional district map in Indiana.

But with that introduction you just gave I’ll just quickly wrap it up and say:

Back to you Stony

—————————————————

And may running bear not find you sitting on his crapper

when he has urges too Johnny

You’ve been watching too many  old Tonight Show re-runs Rufus.

Well folks you veterans of the show out there

Know what time it is

Yep

It’s time for our

Assistant Executive Producer

of Everything

that is,

of everything that’s good and exciting

and that makes life worth living

yes….I’m talkin’ about

Suzi

My gosh, what would we do without her?

I’d hate to think, but in any event

Its time for her

To show us what she’s found

Down in the dark dank and dirty garage

Sittin’ below the station here.

….What’s this?

Geez….Suzi you really did dig for this one didn’t ya?

Yeah, not sure if that was a Tarantula

Or just the biggest blackest Black Widow Spider

That I had to wrestle for this particular 45 or not

Yuck  cobwebs all over the place.

There’s enough mold on here to make

A years’ supply of some exotic blue cheese or somethin’

Just shut up and play the tune.

I called GURU and he was really impressed I’d found it.

Folks, Suzi has just handed me a tune

I hadn’t heard before

But I do recognize the group

And we have featured them before

The Seeds

And….

…ah yes

  1. What a year !

What could be finah than some garage rock from ‘67

Okay…let’s give it a spin..

https://youtu.be/0-qU8t0qy9M?si=O2W8hpy4NXW2Pvmm

Folks that was Out of the Question

By the Seeds.

And once again Suzi has made my day.

The 60s the best music ever.  No doubt about it.

Folks, GURU just called me

And said he thinks we ought to save his other blues tune

….a true classic…for next week

….to sorta keep all Yinz out there

In Yinzburgh and everywhere else

For that matter…in anxious anticipation.

And I think that’s a great idea

Which brings to mind

The owner of Manny’s

Bein’ that the crowd there

Leans kinda country-like

several weeks ago she

Requested that GURU do a tune

…which he did two weeks ago.

I mean we gotta do a country tune right?

And I think it might keep everyone goin’ just fine

In any event…..Here’s

Dierks Bentley

Singin’

What Was I Thinkin’

https://youtu.be/fTqra4YSsaM?si=Lb3Z6FBn3dveEvJK

Okay, Buck’s over there crankin’ his arms

And that’s the signal

To wind things up because we’re out of time

So, let’s finish things off tonight

With a performance

That I just love

It’s by the Mavericks

And their lead singer

Who, unfortunately passed away just a few days ago

This particular song has an extremely interesting history

It was written by Cat Stevens.  But…

Cat’s version didn’t do much

But a group called the Tremeloes

Who once beat out the Beatles believe it or not for a record deal

Came up with a different arrangement of it

And actually made the song famous.

So Here  to send ya home

Is Raul Malo

May he rest in peace

and the Mavericks

resurrecting the Tremelo version of this tune

Which I’m sure you’re gonna like

But in any event

For Suzi, Rufus, Buck, Guru

And your’s truly

I’m Stony Riva

Sayin’

Good night

And  please folks

don’t let those nasty bed bugs bite.

Here’s

Here Comes My Baby
