Good evenin’ folks
LA is burnin’
But we are expected 6 inches of snow
Let’s hope the firefighters out there
Get a hold of that dreadful situation
Our hearts go out to those
Folks on the Left coast
Meanwhile over here on the Right
We are gonna get a flake or two
More likely a gazillion
But never mind all your troubles
We got
Suzi
We got
Buck
We got
Rufus
And even GURU
Or at least his spirit who
Might interject a thought or two
Our first song
is by a guy who must have been
Very talented.
He co-wrote
Here Comes the Judge
Made famous on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in
And Devil with the Blue Dress On which was
Later made a hit
By Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
And by our own GURU
Back at Caddy’s
Way way back there in the 90s
Our first artist
was apparently much admired
especially by other Motown musicians
But for some reason, was often overlooked
He, like so many musicians, died young
At the age of 29 when
…according to the Oracle of Wiki
on June 29, 1969, he drowned
when his boat crashed on the Detroit River…
Stevie Wonder played the harmonica at his burial,
and placed it on his casket afterwards
Here’s Shorty Long
Burnt Toast & Black Coffee
https://youtu.be/FRumvnNXc4k?si=1Q9-VS-hTNMbW3rN
Yeah, that’ll get us goin’
Apparently, that very cool tune
Was popular in Belgium a while back
Up next….
Here’s a group from Dayton Ohio
Who according to the Oracle
started out as the backing group for Falcon
Eventually going their own way
They had several hits
One of the most famous being “Fire”
Known for suggestive album covers
Flashy costumes
And great tunes
Here are…
The Ohio Players with Skin Tight
https://youtu.be/qSfxt4_wJLY?si=EfXyuKBrwfo0jW88
Man, it’s a wonder that they could afford
Bus fare between gigs
It looks like they spent all their money
On costumes.
But movin’ on
let’s change it up here
…pun intended…
With a wannabe baseball player
Who, saved himself
in the nick of time and
Decided to be a country singer instead
Only trouble was he was Black
And the Grand Ole Opry
Wasn’t exactly known
For payin’much attention to Black singers.
But…ya can’t hold down true talent
At least not for long
And this artist went on to become so big
That he had 30…count’em 30
Number 1 country hits.
And, the Oracle of Wiki also tells us
That he’s won a Grammy, been named
Entertainer of the Year in 1971
And is one of 3 Black members of
The Grand Old Opry.
Here he is on the Marty Stuart show
Singin’ one of his most famous hits.
Here’s
Charlie Pride with Kiss an Angel Good Morning

Okay, Buck is signalling that
Rufus….
You know
Our station manager
Rufus Coldwater
Has a very short announcement at the half tonight
And when he’s done
I’m going to sneak in 2 extra tunes
Rufus whatchya got for us?
————————————————————————–
Thanks Stony
I don’t have much to say other than I recommend everyone take a peek at this next video because this guy’s got something important to say about Trump’s foreign policy
https://youtube.com/shorts/wMpwtR8ABi0
Well, that’s it from here Stony. Back to you.
Okay thanks Rufus.
Many of yinz fans out there
Remember GURU’s tales of Daryl
or Darrell or however she spelled it
She was GURU’s babysitter
When he was a little tike
Way back in the early 60s.
She used to babysit GURU and his sisters
She used to upset GURU
because she wouldn’t watch any
Cowboys and Indians
Or Combat
Or any other shows that had any taste
For 8 or 9 year old boy
Naw
Instead, she made them watch this show called
“Shindig”
And we’ve heard many tales about
Getting snuggly under the blankets
With Daryl.
So, I asked Suzi
You know
Our Assistant Executive Producer of Everything
To try to find us somethin’ about
Shindig
Down in the Garage.
And Suzi bein’ Suzi
As always came up with
Not one but several great videos
Dealin’ with Shindig
And I think Yinz will enjoy these
Because they really do
Get the juices flowin’
And all I can say
The teens in the 60s
Sure could have
One Heck of a good time
Here we are goin’ to see a few clips
By a gal who apparently made
More than 25 appearances on Shindig
All over a two or perhaps 3 year period
She was a real show stopper for a couple of years
But after about 3 years or so
Gave up show business entirely
…a simply amazing fact….
All to get married
To have kids and settle down
And after you see these videos
You wll say…”Wow!”
I love these videos
And I hope yinz will too.
Here’s a 60’s heathrob
Donna Loren with
Too Many Fish in the Sea
Followed by
Bad Boy
https://youtu.be/9isdf-1jO58?si=DUqFxN_24Vdajidz
I have to apologize
to Beyonce, Madonna, Janet Jackson, etc etc etc
just can’t compare to
Ms. Loren and the kids in that video
They are just so….
Wonderfully genuine. Yeah genuine
I don’t want to say wholesome
Because wholesome isn’t rock n roll and Shindig
was definitely rock n roll and soul and beyond
They just look like kids….teenagers…having a blast.
And, Just great choreography !
A video like that just brings tears to my eyes.
What a great great era that was.
Alright enough of me
Goin’ on and on..
Here’s video numero dos.
https://youtu.be/caTjqze8ZDs?si=dT2XDwWsm-roc0l5
Oh well, long skirts notwithstanding
After all that clip was probably before mini-skirts
But whatever
Now that all of Yinz are addicted
Let’s have another dose of Ms. Loren
In this one, she sings the first tune
And then Bobbie Sherman
The bubble gum male heartthrob of the era
Appears
And he and Ms. Lorendo do an incredible number
As a duet
This Must have taken tons of preparation by everyone
I’m sure.
In fact, even GURU says he could never do what
Loren and Sherman do here. In any event
Here’s Ms. Loren with Rock Me In the Cradle
Followed by a duet featuring Ms. Loren and Bobby Sherman
With Casting my Spell on You
https://youtu.be/wR2ieTIdfII?si=iMqi4BLSTEwhOpnt
GURU tells me that….given the number of shows she did
And especially the dancing she sometimes did
And then a tune like that with Sherman
She must have been rehearsing nonstop for 3 years or so
just to do Shindig…..and
then she also found time
to appear in movies and other
Productions too.
Hat’s off to Ms. Loren
And to Shindig
What a treasure both were !
Okay. Buck is giving me the wrap it up signal
And so,
To send everyone home on this cold wintery January evening
Here’s another tune that GURU
Claims he made famous at Caddy’s back in the 90s
This came out towards the end of the good MTV era
Or maybe even slightly after
Because it was 1988.
So, here hitting cleanup tonight
Is a great tune
From a group of guys from mother England
Here is
The Escape Club with their mega hit Wild Wild West
https://youtu.be/6vE5ewvxdfo?si=dLhGYjS4k3CS7isR
And just in case none of you
Were exactly adept at translating wrap
Here are the wrap lyrics to the bridge.
“Brrrr, here come a musical disc
‘Cause some people them a-keep waitin’ for
This one’s called the outlaw, wow
They want me
Ride the rhythm like me ridin’ a bike
Shine on me
Murder me chatter when me chat on the mic
Shorties thought this could keep them rockin’ ’til the broad daylight
And here comes the Escape Club to rock it all night, say”
Well, that’s it for tonight folks
No drinkin’ and drivin’ please
Its gonna be slick out there!
For Suzi
Buck
Rufus
GURU
And me
Stony Riva
Good night
And never ever
Let those bed bugs bite.
