[Editor’s Note: This is the latest edition of Tick’s Notes and Tunes. It is a transcript of a fictional radio broadcast with direct links to the tunes being played. The transcript is in 3 parts.
(1.)The first is the first half of a transcript of the radio broadcast with tune links; (2.) The Editorial: (which normally deals with the subject in the title of this post). This week there is no editorial ; 3.) The second half of the radio broadcast with tune links.
The purpose of this blog is to discuss, enlighten and educate the reader about relevant political, economic and business matters and to help maintain both a record and an appreciation for good old man-made music before AI makes man and real music a mere afterthought. ]
Good evenin’ folks
Stony here along with Buck and Suzi
GURU’s out and about
Maybe he’ll grace us with a text or somethin’
Look we have tons to do tonight
Rufus is here
But he says he doesn’t think he can fit an editorial in tonight
Because he thinks we ought to do
Somethin’ Special for the holidays
We’ll see.
So, let’s get to it.
I promised my GF that one day I’d do our first tune
And bein’ that it is the Holiday season
I’ll kick off tonight’s show with it.
This is for you honey cakes
You know who you are
Just know
I’m waitin for the 25th to give you
the big present.
[distant barely audible chuckle]]
[coughing
Folks please enjoy
Our first group
Who are originally from
Watts, California
This was a big hit for them in 1979
Here are
The Whispers with And the Beat Goes On
https://youtu.be/slldMEPvUqA?si=6SfD6PxI7grKOni0
This next trio was very famous in the mid and
Early 60s
The group consisted of Peter Yarrow,
Paul Stookey
And Mary Travers
GURU says that when he thinks of folk music
He thinks of this group
Yarrow and Stookey did some of their writing
But they also famously did covers
Of tunes by
Pete Seeger
Woodie Guthrie
And
Bob Dylan
In this next tune
They acknowledge
the rise of a competing genre of music
Here are
Peter Paul & Mary singing I Dig Rock and Roll Music
https://youtu.be/9rOTKeoAs7M?si=8mV-RvQxuehtgCKo
I’ve always loved that tune and heard GURU sing it one night
Which was kind of surprising since it’s a trio
But it Went pretty well.
Okay next up is the Swiss psychobilly group believe it or not
That we’ve grown quite fond of
Here once again calling on
Sparky Phillips, a Welshman, for a vocal assist.
Hillbilly Moon Explosion (featuring Sparky) Queen of Hearts
https://youtu.be/jSR9CLcVBMM?si=-ArJl6LKUi9NXn4I
Okay that would normally do it for our first half
And we’d do Rufus’s editorial about nothin’ that important next.
But Rufus tells us we’re too short of time
So he’s punting but he does highly recommend that
everyone watch this video
Somethin’ about Musk and Oligarch’s
overwhelming the legal system to
maintain control over all of us.
Okay, so that means it’s time for Suzi
Our exceedingly competent and trustworthy
Assistant Executive Producer of Everything
to bring us one of her selections from the garage
And lo and behold
I believe I’m familiar with this tune
And once again
Suzi doesn’t disappoint.
This band is from Austin Texas
And did their dirty deeds in
The mid and late 60s
I think everyone will enjoy this
Here are the
13th Floor Elevators with Your Gonna Miss Me
https://youtu.be/YIVpHNEPzDM?si=bBXxQ0HHaWS12P5Y
Yeah, I really liked that.
We push forward the clock about five or six years
For our next group
According to the Oracle of Wike
They originally called themselves the
Soft White Underbelly
They formed essentially from jamming together
At Stony Brook University out on Long Island
They are probably most known for their
Tune Don’t Fear the Reaper
Perhaps Godzilla and one or two others
But GURU is a great admirer of their catalogue
as a whole
Here’s one example.
Blue Oyster Cult with Take Me Away
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM5TO-NAIU0
Once I get the chorus to that tune in my head
I find that I keep singing it for the entire day.
Before we get to tonight’s special
I should say that this is normally
Where we play our cleanup hittin’ group
And tonight we have 2 contemporary country stars
Teamin’ up for a tune everyone will recognize.
Here’s
David Lee Murphy and Kenny Chesney doin’
Dust on the Bottle
https://youtu.be/3wFKF6EizuQ?si=sE5Y5T7MRyL5GOR-
Well, it’s that time of year again.
And so our show merits something special
Fans of our program know
That Tull is one of my two fav bands of all time
But Tull has never had a number one tune or LP
A couple of albums got to number two on the charts
But…the top spot eluded them.
Interestingly, enough, they have had a couple of
Very successful Christmas albums that I believe
Have also reached number 2 on this or that chart
….but I wasn’t at all familiar with them
I’m ashamed to say.
So I gave one a listen
For tonight’s show
….and I should have known better
Because Tull’s whole sound dovetails with
Christmas perfectly
Probably because so many of their tunes
Have a Misty Isle folksy thing goin’ on
And then
…the flute just does it…
I should have realized
That Tull and Christmas
Can go together long ago
Because in fact a few of Tull’s commercial tunes
That I AM familiar with
deal with Christmas as a subject.
That’s me
Put it in front of me
In flashing neon lights
And I will miss it.
Anyway we will finish tonight
And wish everyone a very
Merry Christmas
And Happy Holidays.
With none other than
Two cups of holiday cheer
Jethro Tull
Another Christmas Song
https://youtu.be/-F2cZucio84?si=OKrpwJMY08DIIGYg
and
Jethro Tull’s Greensleeved
yes, Greensleeved not Greensleeves
https://youtu.be/W5o9slJqQSs?si=MUuF-xYjAsRzyEfe
P.S. The Tull Christmas albums do sound very good
If you’re looking for something a little different
for your Holiday music library.
Good night and don’t let them thar
Bed bugs bite !
