Economies Trump v Biden Music Sam & Dave

Sam & Dave Soul and R&B music tribute

[Editor’s Note:  This is the latest edition of Tick’s Notes and Tunes. It is a transcript of a fictional radio broadcast with direct links to the tunes being played.  The transcript is in 3 parts.

(1.)The first is the first half of a transcript of the radio broadcast with tune links; (2.) The Editorial: (which normally deals with the subject in the title of this post). Tonight it’s comments on The Economies of Trump versus Biden; (legible charts relevant to the Editorial are at the bottom of this page) and (3) That’s followed by a the second half of the broadcast with tune links.

The purpose of this blog is to discuss, enlighten and educate the reader about relevant political, economic and business matters and to help maintain both a record and an appreciation for good old man-made music before AI makes man and real music a mere afterthought. ]

Good Evenin’ folks

Stony Riva here

Along with

Suzi

Buck

And

Rufus Coldwater.

Not sure where GURU is

But anyway….

It’s great to be with Yinz

I just wish it were under a little better circumstances.

By request from one of our regular listeners

The one

The only

Red

Dog

That’s Red Dog

We’re here to honor

The dynamic duo of 60’s

Soul and rhythm &  blues

Ain’t nobody like Sam & Dave

Nor will there ever be.

But one week ago tonight

Sam Moore of the group we’re honoring

Sam & Dave

Passed away

Apparently after surgery

He was 89.

May he rest in peace

But he didn’t leave without

Leavin’ the World with a treasure trove

Of great tunes.

Sam and Dave

Were famous recording artists with

Memphis based Stax Records

And later with Atlantic records

Stax was a soul, gospel, R&B and blues label

Based in Memphis that rose to prominence

during the 60s and into the mid 70s

and largely competed with

Detroit-based Motown for supremacy  in

the soul and R&B genre.

Like Otis Redding,

Booker T and the MGs

tonights celebrated artists

were a major reason for Stax’s success.

And very interestingly

Isaac Hays

Yes that Isaac Hays

and David Porter also contributed

a lot of songwriting talent to both Stax

and to

our featured artists.

According to the Oracle of Wiki

“Sam & Dave were technically on the Atlantic roster

but were “leased” to Stax by Atlantic,

with Stax overseeing their recordings and

issuing them on the Stax label.

Virtually all of Sam & Dave’s Stax material

was written and produced by Hayes and Porter.”

But tonight’s featured group

Was essentially responsible for defining the term

“soul” music simply because of their biggest hit

“Soul Man” which won a Grammy Award.

Sam and Dave

were the biggest selling act at Stax Records

next to Aretha Franklin in the years 1965 to 1968

And they are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Sam Moore is the tenor

Dave Prater is the baritone.

But time is short

so let’s quit with the chatter

Here they are

The dynamic duo of soul

Who were also known as

The Sultans of Sweat and

Double Dynamite with

I Take What I Want

https://youtu.be/ez6B2Zz1E2Y?si=QFUsbEc-KGtnltEy

Sure enough that tune was written by

Isaac Hayes and David Porter

however Mabon “Teenie” Hodges

also got some writing credit.

But that’s not all

Here’s another Porter and Hayes tune

You Don’t Know Like I Know

https://youtu.be/KJulwIdx9BM?si=ihF6O50izfff7ji0

From that video you can definitely see why

they were such great great crowd pleasers.

This next tune is a song originally written and

performed by the legendary Sam Cooke

who GURU says is one of his favorite singers ever.

It’s called….

Soothe Me

https://youtu.be/JEVRdZgOHMY?si=PlXhiPa-k-4WY0cI

I don’t know about you but I can definitely hear

Sam Cooke fingerprints on that tune.

Well, that brings us to halftime

And Yinz know what that means.

Yep

Time for our station manager

Rufus Coldwater

to lay a little

…usually very little…

wisdom on us

I’m just kidding of course

We love ya Rufus

What’s up?

—————————————————————-

Well, Stony I’m tired of being an old fuddy duddy.

I was just sitting here watching the commercial that was done about tonight’s show.

The first half of the video has some very interesting slides comparing the Trump and Biden economies and I recommend for everyone to watch it and to actually stop the video and look at the slides.  They are very informative.  (The charts relevant to the video are at the bottom of this page.).    I’m informed by the producer of those video shorts that they have to be one minute or less and that it’s a huge challenge to get the info crammed into that short of a space.   Anyway here’s the link to that video:

https://youtube.com/shorts/cMOD_1fXc7A

and I now understand that there’s a second video to elaborate on the first. Here’s the link for the second video:

But talking about Sam and Dave

Off stage the two had a very testy relationship.

It became so strained at times that Moore would leave the stage

right in the middle of a show.

Apparently there was disagreement over the direction of the duo’s material and stage act.

Moore became increasingly frustrated with songs

Their first breakup was in 1970

They made numerous sporadic attempts at getting back together

Prater tried to continue the group by teaming with

Sam Daniel’s in the 1970s and touring under the name

the New Sam & Dave Revue, which Sam Moore didn’t like too much.

Prater died in  a car crash in 1988.

Moore had a solo career for many years and, of course, passed away

just a week or so ago.

But that’s my 2 cents.

And, oh, by the way, some of Sam and Dave’s earliest

tunes were written by Steve Cropper who

as you know, was the lead guitarist for

Booker T and the MGs

But it’s your show Stony

So ….back to you.

————————————————————————————————

Wow…good job Rufus

Didn’t know you were such a fan of

Sam & Dave

Well folks, as most of Yinz know

After halftime we

Usually have Suzi bring us somethin’ to play

from the garage.

But, since we’re devoting tonight’s show

To Sam & Dave

She’s gone to the break room instead

And don’t tell nobody  but she may even be

Sippin on a brewsky or somethin

This next tune really needs no introduction.

It’s yet another Porter and Hayes original.

Hold On I’m Comin’

https://youtu.be/Go6wGFKBh9k?si=IB_3XVgfyu9dpIxF

That might just be my favorite Sam and Dave tune

That video would have had to have been made in the 70s

during a fairly tense period in Sam & Dave’s relationship.

But hey….didn’t affect their performance now did it?

Not one bit !!

Another Porter and Hayes tune is

You Got Me Hummin

https://youtu.be/VwL_aaOkUck?si=kOiEioC3StyTcfxr

Okay I can see that Buck is over there pointin’ at his watch

and urging me to keep things movin’

So here’s a tune that

anyone who watched the Blues Brothers knows for sure.

It might be one of the most famous tunes ever.

Soul Man

https://youtu.be/S_OX2HwWy-o?si=1LlTfgRQon6JxBWn

Wow !  That’s always a real crowd pleaser

And with good reason.

Well folks….That brings us to the close of our

Tribute.

But not before we let the dynamic duo

express their appreciation

ZZ Top had a hit when they

covered our cleanup song tonight

Once again it was written by Porter and Hayes

I Thank You

https://youtu.be/6_jH-TXUhzU?si=G1T15LY5ijc6qHU4

They definitely had a stage act without peer !

No question.

Wonder how many times the horn players

needed to have a chipped tooth fixed or replaced

I’m talkin’ about the way they flip those horns around

I bet they had more than one fat lip from hitting one

another while playin’ those horns

Well. …who knows?

Folks

We gotta get outta here.

For Suzi

Buck

And Rufus

I’m Stony Riva

Thanks and

Good night

And

Don’t ever ever

let them nasty bed bugs bite !
