OPINION and ANALYSIS:
Trump’s Triumphal Arch. Does it remind you of anything? Have you been to Paris at anytime during the last 200 years? Napolean. You remember him don’t you. From history class. Yeah, the self-proclaimed emperor of the French who brought decades of European land battles that regularly engaged hundreds of thousands of soldiers, not to mention similar epic engagements at sea, annihilation and abandonment of armies in Russia and Egypt. The guy, whom, for a brief period ruled most all of Europe as a virtual dictator. The guy who it took Britain, Prussia, Austria and Russia to defeat. Yes that guy. He built a little something, that the tourists love on the Champs Elysees. You may want to take a gander at it. It sure does look one heck of a lot like Trump’s proposed Triumphal Arch. [And this is a major reason why we constantly get the words “Arc” and “Arch” confused when dealing with this subject.]
All of this raises the very important question: Is this America? Does this $100 milliion dollar monstrosity reflect our core beliefs? Is this symptomatic of some very disturbing developments in the basic psyche of America? Glory ! Conquest ! Power ! What does this say about Trump and his intentions? What will this monstrosity say about us once it is built?
Frankly, we never, in our wildest dreams would have thought that America, the land of the free and home of the brave–the country that has been the recipient of the greatest governing document ever conceived by man (namely, the U.S. Constitution with its Bill of Rights, notions of due process, equal protection and a government that is subjec to law) would resort to worshiping the things that we apparently worship and value today under the GOP supported Trump Administration.
We should be ashamed that this is what we’ve become. Our founding fathers are turning over in their graves.
And, predictably enough, the Republicans have done nothing to stop Trump from building this monumental scar on our national honor.
