OPINION and ANALYSIS:
Artificial intelligence is going to cause massive unemploytment. Social security is going to be insolvent sometime around 2033. A major cause of the insolvency is that the United States is not having enough babies to maintain the required worker/retiree ratio to keep social security afloat. Should this not cause us to change our policies on immigration? Don’t we need more immigrants?
One might reasonably argue that going forward only the companies that are heavily invested in AI–meaing their stockholders and owners–will be making any significant income. Does this mean that we need to serously start thinking about universal basic income for everyone?
It strikes us that Congress is being criminally negligent in not addressing these issues more seriously and that all debate be more public. As such, and in an attempt to bring these issues forward in a more serious way we’ve drafted the letter below that everyone can use as a form to write their Congressman and Senators. (Below that are: (1) a vitally important video about AI by Senator Bernie Sanders that is a MUST SEE.; and (2) Our video on this subject.)
This is reasonandbalance’s attempt to Congress to start focusing on these vitally important issues: Here’s the letter:
—————————————
Dear Congressman/Senator
Frightening changes are occurring all around us. The bills keep mounting and now we have an expensive war wiith Iran. Meanwhile we have other urgently pressing financial needs Please let me know what your position is on:
1. Senator Sanders’ proposal to pause development of artificial intelligence. I know we don’t want the Chinese or anyone else getting ahead of us, but I’m afraid AI will wipe out humanity.
2. What is Congress going to do about the solvency of Social Security. Members of my family are heavily dependent on it to put a roof over their heads and food on their tables. By the mid-2030s I expect to be in the same position.
3. People tell me America is not having enough babies to sustain social security. Doesn’t this mean that we need more immigrants, not less?
.4. How will America pay for all the people who will be laid off or lose their jobs and/or careers because of AI? Don’t we need a plan for universal basic income to help solve this problem?
I await your response to this letter. Thank you.
