Dictatorship of the ill-informed?
The Directors of both FEMA and the Library of Congress have been fired in the last day or so. (This being May 9, 2025) That and Trump’s attacks on Harvard and many other colleges and universities is indicative of an extremely disturbing trend that indicates that Trump intends to control both the information we hear and see but also what the official records about him will say. This is not to mention Trump’s total and blatant disregard of environmental problems that might well present an existential challenge in the very near future. All of this is indicative of the fact that neither Trump, nor Republicans generally, believe in either science or in truly objective, fact and reason-based scholarship and/or in academia generally. Trump and the Republicans have no use for science or academia. They insist on believing any version of the “facts” that support their notion of reality (which aren’t really facts at all) . Since, Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger and the like have left Congress there is nothing left of the Grand Old Party except a Trump worshipping cult. The old GOP, the noble GOP, the GOP of Ronald Reagan, both Bushes, Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Howard Baker, Bob Dole and other loyal, hardworking public servants (and one might even include Richard Nixon) is long gone and isn’t even a shell of its former self. It is a deeply flawed, infected, zombie-like hideous creature that has no respect for the Constitution and will not protect or uphold it unless it is Trump’s desire to do so. And there are no longer any reasonable argument that Trump desires to do so.
