Rufus told me you’re going skiing the last weekend in ’24, and that he wondered if I could put together
Somethin’ a little different, that he can play for your audience while you’re gone. And since you have never played a single Beatles tune I decided to remind your listeners of the group, who perhaps more than any other influenced not only music but also fashion and who knows what else back during the 60s. So here goes:
Late one night a few years ago on the top of a frigid windswept mountain in Nepal, I was drinkin’ some gawd awful stuff, I think it was the native special. Hot goats milk spiked with some kinda moonshine with some nutmeg sprinked on top. Whewww. But if it’s December, 5 degrees below zero with 35 mile per hour winds and a room full of drunk khukuri-wieldin’ bad-ass hombres it does provide some much needed comfort.
Why was I there? My stupid manager talked me into doin’ a tour of southern Asia of all places. I was fixin’ to sing in some club in Katmandu the next night. But all that’s a long story.
Anyway, I was hummin’ “With a Little Help” from my friends, when some Gurkha sittin’ next to me at the bar struck up a…for lack of better expression…. conversation in some very broken English. And he wanted to know what I was hummin’.
Well….long story short, I told him all about the Beatles and told him that listenin’ to all that Pakastani, Indian Chinese stuff was drivin’ me crazy. Judgin’ by his knife, I’m glad he didn’t take offense and he actually talked me into emailing him (yes he had email) some Beatles links to 10 of my favorite Beatles tunes if I ever got back down the mountain.
So, when I got back to civilization I started to do just that. But damned if I could pick just 10 great Beatles tunes. It’s absolutely true. You can take 10 of the worst tunes the Beatles ever produced and they would be better than virtually any album that has come out in the last 30 years or so. Admittedly I’m quite biased and there are a few exceptions…but very few.
Bottom line…here is what I ended up sending him.

This next tune is worth including if for no other reason
Than it is sung by the drummer Ringo Starr. Ringo did not normally handle the lead vocal duties for the Fab Four (as they came to be known). Most of the singing was done by John Lennon (rhythm guitar) and/or Paul McCartney (on bass) (who has an exceptional voice) with Geoge Harrison (the lead guitarist) going mostly backing vocals. However as time went on one would often find John and Paul playing other instruments, particularly keyboards if session keyboardist Billy Preston wasn’t there.

I will always remember this next tune. I was sittin’ in the Lamp Theatre in Irwin Pa, with some friends getting’ ready to watch a Frankenstein horror flick when the trailer came on for this film. I remember hearing it and the hair on the back of my next just stood at attention. I remember the single stroke opening chord opening chord like it was yesterday. According to one source it’s a G7Sus4. That may or may not be true, but my guitar book says something else, but there’s a Cadd9 in there too, and it is just one heck of a cool rockin’ tune. And those aren’t really typical rock type tunes so you knew the Fab Four was gonna be different.
For anyone who wasn’t around in those days, it’s simply impossible to describe how crazy America and the World became over the Beatles. Girls going absolutely crazy, fainting and all that stuff. What the film depicts here is really what it was like.

Next up is what to me is the most underrated Beatles tune. It’s off of Help.
Here I decided to chose a post-Beatles video when McCartney went on tour to Brazil. I’m still amazed. He’s older. In a foreign country, I believe in Belem or Recife where they speak Portugues. Nevertheless, the crowd unprompted immediately breaks into a supporting chorus in perfect English.

Next up is clearly one of the great all-time tunes of any genre. Written pretty much by Paul, I believe he also plays acoustic guitar on this.

On this next tune, George Harrison comes out of his shell, and is the featured singer on a very popular tune that he wrote. This is a tune that I hack away at on my guitar from time to time with varying degrees of success. When I sing it, the crowd seems to enjoy it.
