Good evenin’ Mr and Mrs. America
And all the ships at sea
Let’s go to press
What that means I’m not totally sure
But my dad used to say it.
I think it was my dad’s version
Of what Walter Winchell opened his radio broadcasts with
Way way back in the 30s and 40s
In any event
We kick off tonight’s festivities with a group
That’s been around for a long time.
…but not as far back as Winchell…
Although they originally formed in San Francisco
different members of our first band
at one time or another
were backing members of bands that
backed Elvis Costello and Van Morrison
This is probably their first hit
but they had a number of others
And if you watched any MTV at all in the 80s
You saw a lot of this band
Their tune Power of Love was featured in the movie
Back to the Future.
The band was pretty much forced into retirement
A few years ago
Because in 2017 their lead singer
Came down with a
A relatively debilitating inner ear disease
That can cause vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss.
This is clearly a tune that,
unless you come from royalty
Or have a big trust fund,
almost any human being
Can relate to.
So let’s kick it off tonight with
Huey Lewis and the News doin’
Workin’ for a Livin’
https://youtu.be/KLATbzMutkc?si=z6iCU_pPoSPISV9K
Alright, as always, Huey can get ya goin’
Anybody who’s been listenin’ to this show long enough
Knows that I have a good deal of nostalgia
For an ole DJ called Alden Aaroe
And our next artists was one that he played
Quite a bit.
And one reason is obvious
She was a very classy and sexy entertainer
Who could definitely sing
According to the Oracle of Wiki
She was born in Jamestown
Not Virginia
We’re talkin here about
North Dakota
Her real name was
Norma Deloris Egstrom
She excelled at singing in a variety of musical genres
Jazz, swing, big band, pop to name a few
Her long career included a stint
As the lead vocalist for Benny Goodman’s band.
Our next tune was made a hit by
None other than Shirley Bassey
However, it was
actually first recorded by our next artist
Back in 1966 or 67.
But let’s stop talkin’
And just listen to
One of the best ever
Here’s
Peggy Lee
https://youtu.be/jM9nZKfcQf8?si=bAfhnIUCPklwNou6
That of course was “Big Spender”
Back in the 60s Edie Adams did a
Very memorable Muriel Cigar commercial
Using that tune
I guess I just can’t help myself folks
There are just certain artists that I can’t get away from
Speaking of which…..
My admiration for our next artist also runs very deep
I love his voice
I loved his attitude…always such a pleasant demeanor
like he was truly enjoying himself
Well…here he showcases his compositional skills as well
Without further ado, here’s a true country/western legend
Clearly one of the greatest ever
The one and only
Marty Robbins
singing
The Cowboy in the Continental Suit
https://youtu.be/ftetdzHNtgI?si=ebMNi2sQLdcBwpnR
Well, folks
That’s end of the first half
And as the teams head to the locker room
We’ll switch over to
The man who’ll provide us with an
incomprehensible in-depth analysis
About stuff
None of us can do anything about
Rufus, take it away

Good evening folks.
Many of us are still kind of numb from the events of a couple of weeks ago. Naturally, I’m talking about our recent 2024 Presidential election. I’m still angry and struggling to understand it. So rather than having me go on and on, I’ll let a a comedian of the fairer sex, a former California Republican campaign manager for John McCain, and then a guy whom I’m sure everyone will recognize all tell you pretty much what’s on my mind.
The first is by the Republican campaign manager, Chris Truax. It is an article published by
“The Hill” on 11/22/24.
https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/5002590-trump-election-uninformed/
I guess the moral of that story is: “Get your news from more than just Fox!” or “Go to class!” Especially history and government class. And while you’re at it, driver’s ed too. Maybe you’ll learn not to tailgate.
[By the way, www.reasonandbalance.com has several blog posts specifically about finding unbiased news. They were written on July 20, 2023, November 5, 2023 and March 11, 2024. Here’s the link to the last such article: https://reasonandbalance.com/more-on-finding-unbiased-news/]
Next for your consideration, I ran across this next video, which is rather humorous, if uncomfortably so. It’s by Sidney Morss and it’s about post-election dating.
https://youtu.be/8eXReB857jM?si=b1ozgqmFlt31d_D5
Eww. Not sure I’d ever want to cross her bow. But she does make some excellent points.
Then there these two sizzlers from someone we all know:
https://youtube.com/shorts/nEWO0O6N5sI
https://youtube.com/shorts/1l_0nJ5qAKc
Well, that’s it for now. Don’t worry folks. Maybe one day I’ll quit venting about all of this.
This is Rufus Coldwater
Back to you Stony.

Okay folks
Our Assistant Executive producer of everything
Suzi
Is back at it.
Yep, she’s been to the garage
And has brought us another
Delicious morsel of 60s garage rock
Suzi are you sure this isn’t
Just a big hunk of Roquefort
It smells awful
And looks worse?
[inaudible rustling]
She assures us it’s a 45
a record that is.
Who are these dudes?
She says
All she knows is
that they’re from Rochester
And just shrugs her shoulders.
Oh well,
I guess we’re gonna be a bit adventurous
So here are….
…..
…it’s hard to read the label
For all the smelly mold….
It looks like they’re called
The Young Tyrants
The song is
I Try
https://youtu.be/h2aaSVCbO7A?si=S4pn0sXIZgIVckXX
Good job Suzi ! Good job.
Suzi really can come through for us can’t she?
Next up is a tune Suzi says is from her own private
album collection…not down in the garage
Her little note here says
And I quote
“Here we have the moving force behind
a punk band that goes back to 1979
in Bristol England
Rebecca Bond aka as Becki Bondage originally fronted
Our next group Vice Squad
They broke up for several years and then reformed
And might even still be performing somewhere”
In any event
Here we have Becki performing a revised
But still a very catchy version
Of Vice Squad’s original hit
Sniffing Glue
https://youtu.be/Bi4RD9AInjU?si=80GKbS8iuZDmuNQS
You been sniffin’ any glue lately Suzi?
[Stony chuckles]
She just frizzed her hair and crossed her eyes folks
Ewww….
Now don’t be given ole Stony any ideas Suzi
I don’t know about Yinz but I’m gonna be a buyer of that version
of Sniffing Glue.
Okay….
We conclude tonight’s festivities
With one of those songs that
Can’t help but to getchya movin’
Lots of people don’t know
But this tune was actually co-written by Isaac Hayes
He and David PortIer wrote this tune in 1967
It was recorded by Sam Moore
And Dave Prater
Otherwise known as Sam and Dave
And turned into a hit that
Seems to transcend time.
So here
For the trip home
Are two legends, Sam and Dave
Singing their mega-hit Soul Man
https://youtu.be/edCH7R4uYmQ?si=2URsl90_CMJc-veU
Well, after a tune like that
Anything else would be
Anti-climactic
And besides
Always leave ‘em
Wantin’ more
So, in short
That’s it
That’s all
There ain’t no more
Thanks for listenin’
Thanks for watchin’
This is Stony Riva
For Buck, Suzi, Rufus and GURU
Wherever he is…
Sayin’
Goodnight
And don’t ever ever let them bed bugs bite!
