Spinners, Cash, Jones & 60’s Garage Tunes

[Editor’s Note:  This is the latest edition of Tick’s Notes and Tunes. It is a transcript of a fictional radio broadcast with direct links to the tunes being played.  The transcript is in 3 parts.

Good evenin’ folks

Stony here

Along with the rest of the crew

Here at DJ Ltd

To bring Yinz an evenin’ of

Toe tappin’ tunes and some

Good old fashioned fun

We start off tonight’s show

With a group that really needs no introduction

Going wayback to Motown heydays

You know them from giant hits such as

Could it be I’m Falling in Love and

I’ll be Around

Here they are

Members of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame

From Ferndale Michigan

The Spinners    with It’s a Shame

https://youtu.be/WoZP18U5VyY?si=RQw32_J3hzkFg9vE

Well, now that everyone’s in the groove

Next up we have a great cover

Of a tune I’m sure everyone loves

..that was originally done by Cage the Elephant

I love their version..

But for some reason, I have a hankerin’ for

This next cover

Done by a former American Idol contestant

From Woodbridge Virginia

Here’s she’s accompanied by the simply superb

Group founded about 12 or 13 years ago

By Scott Bradlee…

They call themselves Post Modern Jukebox

I think this is really well done

See if you agree….

Here’s

Joey Cook and Postmodern Jukebox

With Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked

https://youtu.be/Z4zHMtJv9W8?si=VoDznEt8yaYuEdOP

I love the original of that tune by Cage the Elephant

But I must admit I am quite taken by the

Cook/Postmodern version too.

Well, that kind of put me in the mood for

Some horns….that should make Red Dog happy

I keep harking back to Aldon Aaroe

A disc jockey on WRVA

…morning radio in Richmond Virgina

Back in the 60s

Here’s a guy…very probably the most famous

Trumpet player of that era…

Either he or Louis Armstrong that is

( with Doc Severinson of the Tonight Show

coming up fast on the outside…)

But our next artist always had weight problems

And I remember he visited the Medical College of Virginia

To have his stomach stapled so that it was smaller

All so he couldn’t eat so much.

But to show Yinz just how big our next artist was back then

He was a featured act during the half-time show

At Super Bowl Number One.,.

Way way way back in January of 1967

(which our GURU

Says he actually watched on black and white TV)

So, let’s give a listen to one of

Alden Aaroe’s all-time favorites

Al Hirt    with  Poor Butterfly

https://youtu.be/1Kv2kn9rS8s?si=z5fEx7uB81kLGXi3

Okay…now that we’re all chilled and relaxed

I guess we need our station manager

To come in here and burst our bubble.

Just kiddin’ Rufus…

Take it away..

————————————-

Hey folks,  Rufus Coldwater here.

I don’t know about you folks but I’m kind of suffering from whiplash.  Or at least it feels that way.  Assassination attempts, Presidential withdrawals and what-not have left me feeling a little numb.  I frankly am not sure what to say at this point.  I almost feel that anything is somewhat premature until the Democrats officially figure out who their real nominee is going to be.  True, it looks like Kamala Harris is going to get the nod, especially after Obama’s endorsement, but let’s wait and see.  If she is the nominee, it will be very interesting to see who her VP pick will be.

I do, however, have some video suggestions for those of you who want to further their understanding of a variety of subjects:

Republicans always used to be both  free markets and free trade oriented, Adam Smith style.  Not so much anymore  at least on the international front with Trump proposing tariffs.  Well, back in 2017 this video was done on Free Trade and this very important guy named David Ricardo by a former adjunct professor of business, who many of you will recognize, who used to teach international business: https://youtu.be/V3RbOjR06XI

(And, for those who really want to get into the weeds on the subject of international trade, protective tariffs, the World Trade Organization and how global trade affects us see: https://youtu.be/bMhgsotZQw8  and https://youtu.be/b8Y1xJqrRf8, [Before Trump, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the Chinese (and Xi)  started increasingly belligerent saber-rattling over Taiwan these videos essentially reflected how most politicians and economists thought of world trade and its desirability. And think about it. Is the World more or less stable than it was in 2017?]

Speaking of Alito and Thomas gifts, judicial ethics and getting genuine real justice in the courts, if you happen to live in a state where they elect judges by popular vote of the general public, you may want to check out a highly opinionated, but thought provoking piece: https://youtube.com/shorts/–IHLE8JxA0

Finally, many in broadcast and print journalism inundate us with references to the evils of socialism and communist conspiracies. We definitely are not commies here at DJ Ltd but if you are looking for an objective analysis of what socialism really is, and whether it’s good, bad or downright evil you may want to check out:  https://youtu.be/NcZkZFb_oRw

Well.  That’s a lot of homework for sure.   In any event, look, listen, enjoy….

This is Rufus Coldwater

Thanks for listening

Back to you Stony

————————————–

Thanks Rufus

I know all of us are gonna run right home

And watch each and every one of those videos

Right after tonight’s show.

Well…it’s about time…

[sounds of chest heaving panting]

[ “ here”….]

Folks that was our own beloved

Executive Assistant Producer of Everything

…I’m talkin’ of course about

Suzi

She just handed me two 45s

Here can ya please dry this other one off?

Thanks…

Ok

Folks Suzi has just taken the two records

I was goin’ to play for Yinz

And given me these two instead.

So I guess I have no choice

But I do have faith in Suzi

She hasn’t done us wrong yet

In bringin’ us some musical treats

from down in the garage.

So let’s give this first one a spin

The record says it by

the Humans

and the tune is…   The Warning

https://youtu.be/DrXtzKqyBU0?si=fLHrvhQMtFIOoy2H

Okay…Okay…good job…good job

You’re still on my right side Suzi…

Now let’s see if ya can go 2 for 2….

Folks this next tune is by

Mouse and the Traps

The name of the tune is Maid of Sugar

https://youtu.be/Zx6xM0IvpHA?si=rW1qgT6wyCZ_LAyH

Alright! Way to go Suzi!  Wow!

Folks, while those tunes were playin’

I got to do a teenie bit of research

According to the Oracle of Wiki

The first band…

The “Humans” were a 60’s garage rock band

From Albion New York

Who did at one time open for two big named bands

the Hollies

and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels.

The second band

Mouse and the Traps

Again according to the Oracle of Wiki

is another garage band

but this time from Tyler Texas.

They have a very complicated

and intriguing history

And apparently

when they want to

can sound like a

better version of Bob Dylan

Most of their stuff is or was on singles

But Suzy tells me to check out their album

Public Execution which apparently was released

Much later in their career.

All I can say is …

For such a youngster Suzi really knows her

60’s garage stuff

We’ll have to ask her about that sometime

How she knows so much.

Well, …it’s that dadburned time again

…is that even a word.?

Dadburned?

It is?

Folks  Buck over there in the control booth

Is tellin’ me that

Dadburned…is just slang for doggone

Okay well then

let’s say it proper like

Folks, I’m sittin here alookiin’ at the clock and

It’s that doggone time again..

anyway

Speaking of down home country

We’re gonna change it up a bit tonight

Our cleanup tune is usually a rockin’ sledgehammer

But tonight

Well …tonight I ran across a picture

That I will always cherish

Always..always…always

So everyone out there

Get out your hanky

And I’ll just say

This is for you 99

I will always believe that

…”we missed it by…

As Max used to say… ‘that much’”

Here’s just an unbelievably great duo

With an unbelievably great tune…

George Jones and Johnny Cash  with  I Still Miss Someone

https://youtu.be/ls9EfYueUT4?si=6svdiZ3aH2krKUyV

Wheewww….what a tune!

What a tune!

What a tune !!

There will never ever

be two bigger country legends

than George and Johnny

it’s a real treat to hear them do a duet

Incidentally

That tune was written by Johnny Cash and his nephew

Well,  that’s it

There ain’t no more

I sure do hope that you folks

Enjoyed tonight’s show

as much as I did.

So for Suzi, Buck, GURU

…yes GURU is still alive…

And Rufus

And all the other folks

…and critters

here at station DJ Ltd

Goodnight and as 99 might say

Don’t let the bed bugs Bite.
